Alejandro García del Toro, general deputy director for U.S. Affairs at Cuba's Foreign Ministry (MINREX), confirmed recent foreign press reports on meetings between US and Cuba’s officials in Havana.
Cuba’s Charge d’Affaires a.i., Juan Humberto Macias Pino, paid a courtesy call on State Minister for Foreign Affairs in charge of International Affairs, Henry Okello Oryem, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kampala. The meeting focused on the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and the historical relationship between Cuba and Africa. Ambassador Pino highlighted Cuba’s continued support for African independence struggles and the fight against colonialism. He recalled Havana’s role in supporting South Africa’s liberation during the apartheid era. The meeting reaffirmed Kampala’s position that African states must speak with one voice on issues affecting fellow members of the Movement.

China reaffirmed its support for Cuba in the defense of its national sovereignty and security following recent threats from US President Donald Trump. Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning underscored, responding to a question from Prensa Latina, her nation’s opposition to foreign interference in the affairs of the Caribbean island. “We once again urge the United States to end the blockade, sanctions, and all forms of coercive measures against Cuba, as this would benefit regional peace and stability.”
